Amazon Multiple Reviews: I was persuaded to buy this book
because of all the 5-star reviews. However, upon receiving it, I’m mystified by
the high ratings. One recipe has unclear instructions, and another mentions an
ingredient in the instructions that isn’t listed. Oil and salt-free cooking,
even with the inclusion of nuts and miso, lacks flavor and feels unsatisfying
to me.
On the positive side, the book is beautiful to hold and look
at, with thick pages and colorful photos. Each of the 33 superfoods is given
two dedicated pages detailing its history, nutrients, and benefits. Despite
this, any seasoned cook could come up with these recipes—I was expecting more
excitement.
About 40% of the book focuses on ancient cultures and plant
associations, which I didn’t find pertinent or valuable in a cookbook. I have
no desire to eat like ancient Indians or any other early cultures, whose food
choices were limited by geography and knowledge. The recipes rely too heavily
on nuts and seeds and include too many desserts and sweet recipes for my taste.
In my opinion, there are far better vegan and vegetarian
cookbooks available, many of which are more suitable for actual cooking. The
recipes in this book are too exotic and not something I would want to make.
However, I do love the wonderful pictures and have learned a lot about each
individual superfood.
My Opinion: This marvelous book is more than just a
cookbook. While it features over 100 excellent recipes, it also offers a wealth
of information on the benefits of choosing a plant-based diet for optimal
health.
The book includes chapters on the history of vegetarianism
and plant-based eating in various cultures. The recipes are easy to follow, and
the food photography is absolutely stunning—it's almost hard to believe the
dishes are oil-free, sugar-free, salt-free, and gluten-free. Most ingredients
are already in your pantry, so there's no need for a special trip to the
market.
Margarita Restrepo, the driving force behind the
nutritionally sound and visually appealing Naked Food Magazine, succeeds again
with the superb Master Plants Cookbook. As stated in the book, "Vitality
and strength depend not on how much food is eaten, but on how much of it is
digested and absorbed into your system."
This book is organized, clever, thorough, beautiful, and
most importantly, approachable. The recipes use easy-to-find ingredients and
don't require a PhD to execute. Delicious dishes include Qi Carrot Wraps and
Mediterranean Vegetable Lasagna.
