Bonus Movie Review: You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment,

You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment is based on an 8-week Stanford University study involving 22 sets of genetically identical twins. The study placed one twin on a vegan diet and the other on an omnivorous diet, both of which were healthy. Participants received pre-prepared meals for the first four weeks, and for the remaining four weeks, they prepared their own meals.

According to Christopher D. Gardner, the study leader, the twins on the vegan diet experienced significant health improvements, including a 10% to 15% drop in LDL cholesterol, a 25% drop in insulin, and a 3% drop in body weight, all within eight weeks. Impressively, 21 out of the 22 participants on the vegan diet adhered to it for the entire study duration. Gardner emphasizes that using genetically identical twins enhances the accuracy of the data.

The series focused on four pairs of twins:

Carolyn (vegan) and Rosalyn (omnivore): They aimed to increase Filipino representation in scientific studies. Post-study, both returned to an omnivorous diet but now include more plant-based meals.

Pam (vegan) and Wendy (omnivore): South African chefs who run a catering company. After the study, they reduced their intake of meat and cheese.

John (vegan) and Jevon (omnivore): Nursing students who enjoy working out. They cut out most red meat from their diet after the study.

Michael (omnivore) and Charlie (vegan): Known as "The Cheese Twins," they own a cheese business. Michael became a vegetarian, and Charlie now follows a mostly vegetarian diet.

Internet Reviews: You Are What You Eat: A Twin Experiment shouldn't be taken as medical or nutritional advice, but it might make you reconsider some of the foods you consume. Critics argue that the series is more of a glossy Netflix production than a rigorous scientific documentary.

Some viewers felt it was filled with propaganda and lacked proper scientific controls, such as equal calorie and protein intake and consistent exercise levels. Despite these criticisms, the series did highlight some interesting findings, particularly the improvement in vascular health among the vegan participants.

However, the lack of control over variables like calorie intake and exercise intensity led some to question the validity of the results. The documentary also touched on the impact of diet on telomeres, which was intriguing but not thoroughly explored due to the study's limitations.
