Episode 5 My Failed Diets

Welcome to Healthy Vegan Living Podcast. I'm your host. My name is Gary.

My failed diets. I've had many different diets over my lifespan. I've always been. Diet. In this podcast, we're going to talk about fat diets. I'm going to try to explain to you what a fat diet is and why. Over the years, I've used that diets to control my weight. Some of the problems that you have with fat diets. And we're also going. I want to talk about the diets that I've made.

I am basically a fad diet junky and I have bounced around from so many different types of diets thinking that I could. Lose weight so that I could add that trim, beautiful body that everybody wants to have. The diets appeal to me because. I have rapid weight loss. I didn't have to exercise and most of my fat diets had no clinical studies done on them.

Most of the diets also were between veggies and fruit and they said that they would promote my health. The problem was, in most of these diets I I couldn't go to restaurants. Because you had to stay on the plan, most of them also were health risk. They forced me to eliminate food groups, but I needed to maintain my body.

Most of them are short term and I never had enough calories to really do all the things I wanted. I lost the weight way too. But then I turn around and gain it all back again. I wanted to talk to you about the side effects of these diets.

What it's really strange to me is that when I head on these diets, I would have an alcohol intolerance. I had bad breath, constipation, chronic fatigue, dry mouth, sometimes gout, hair loss, heart palpitations, headaches, leg cramps, nausea, and reduced physical performance at work during sex and sports.

My mental bodily issues would be I was constantly measuring and re measuring the portion controls. I was counting every single county that went into my body. I would review the ingredients of everything. I hate opening it. I had the magic number, of course. Like everything else, I was worrying myself 2-3, maybe four times a day to make sure that I was on the track of losing weight.

What I had created in myself was that basic yo-yo diet. I started the diet, I followed the restrictions of the diet, and I would start feeling depressed because I didn't have those delicious foods I was eating. I would have cravings. Then, I would let go of the diet. And then, I would have low self-esteem and guilt because I couldn't accomplish this with diet, and I would have to start all over again with a different diet.

Another thing that I really thought was interesting about that, that diet is that I had other problems. For example, I had they would damage my bone health. My body was never. The satisfaction that I wanted would decrease my lifespan. I had a serious eating disorder. We didn't have children, and maybe there was a cause of it.

My because I couldn't even get to my perfect body. I had lower self esteem my muscles. Were being eaten. Because I wasn't adding enough calories, the foods I ate were basically nutrient-deficient. I was at risk of heart disease, and it could have affected my diabetes. It's hard to admit that I've done this most of my life, but now, while eating a vegan diet, I have such a wide array of vegetables. And fruit and legumes and seeds. That can compensate for all of the diets that I've done throughout my life. Now, I'm going to just talk quickly about diets so that you understand and don't fall into the same trap that I did. I tried the Atkins diet. Let me tell you, that is a great diet. It has nothing to do with vegan Atkins. Diet is a pure carnivore diet. It's basically low carbs, high fat and what it is, is that you barely eat any vegetables. Maybe a leaf is what they consider a vegetable and you eat huge, enormous portions of meat and. In the diet, of course, you're supposed to get the most expensive meat you can, but nobody can eat that way and survive. We just did our best. Now, my wife was never interested in that diet, so she didn't do it. But when I did the Atkins diet, I did it, and I enjoyed eating the bacon, and I enjoyed eating all that meat back then.

I wasn't thinking vegan for the animals. I was only thinking of my body image. I was able to lose weight. But the problem is eventually, apart from it being very costly because you're buying meat all the time, it's very boring to just eat meat all the time and a little bit of vegetables. There's no variety to improve my blood sugar, but it was very difficult to maintain. And the worst part about it is Doctor Atkins died of heart disease. Here, he is promoting this incredible, wonderful diet, which he dyed himself. So I left that one.

So then I went to the South Beach. Diet, which is. Almost identical to the Atkins diet, and it basically is the same thing. A cardiologist, Dr. Doctor Angaston, stated that it was low carbon, high protein. Which promotes weight loss, but it also increases your cholesterol and is very difficult to maintain with the same problems as the Atkins diet. Maybe it was allowed to have a little. Bit more carbs, but. That was it. That didn't work either.

The next dive I did is Weight Watchers. And Weight Watchers was. An excellent diet pre-portion. They're probably Weight Watchers. Is that all your food comes to your frozen. You eat it by microwaving? What was happening with that? If they had workshops, they were extremely expensive, and they had coaching, which also was expensive. It's a point system. It's just not something I just got so tired of writing down every single piece of food I ate. I had to be very careful. When I went to restaurants to follow their guidelines otherwise. I would gain.

Weight and that's another one that I let go of the next one I tried was the apple cider vinegar diet. You heard all of these claims on YouTube, Facebook, and TikTok that this diet is going to help you reduce weight. What? You do. You should take two or three tablespoons before you eat, and then you. Eat your meal, and the idea with that is that the.

The apple cider vinegar diet maintains good alkaline levels, but it erodes the tooth enamel. My teeth. That was really hard to admit. I mean, I thought it was following the right diet. I followed the plan exactly correctly, but then I had problems with my teeth, and I had to stop it.

But then the next one I tried was the slim, fast diet that is basically a meal replacement plan. You eat breakfast according to their rules, but you have to follow them. For shakes, you had to shake for dinner, and you had to shake for lunch. And sometimes you'd have to. Shake in the breakfast. And you spent all your money buying process shakes? So that you can lose weight. It's not a diet that you can maintain forever. I had to let go of that one, too. The next one I tried was the grapefruit diet. That was bad. But I wanted to try it out. So on that one, every time you have a meal, you eat or drink grapefruit juice, or you eat a grapefruit. And the theory was that the enzymes and the great fruit would break fat. That didn't work very well. I ended up having to give that up. It was just ridiculous. And there was some parts of the year where I just couldn't find grapefruits or I'd have to deal with having to buy processed sugar. Grapefruit juice. I tried that. Jenny Craig. Night. It was a very good night. It's well organized.

But the problem with that one is just like with the other diets, if you buy a system, you have to buy their food. It's all frozen. It's extremely high in salt, about 2300 milligrams per meal, and it increased my blood sugar and my hypertension. My last one was the famous subway. Right now it was fine for a. Little while and. Being able to have a sandwich, but you can't maintain it. That means you have to have a sandwich for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and most of it is white bread. But they have wheat bread options. Then you put mayonnaise and cheese on top of it, and then you later put cucumbers and peppers on it, and that's it. This is the only vegetables they have. Lettuce, tomato, cucumbers and Peppers, and that's it. You can't maintain it. It gets so boring after two weeks of doing it. I had to quit. It's very expensive to eat. Sandwiches aren't cheap. What I'm trying to tell you. Here is that, yes, you're gonna fall into the bad diet.

Someone's going to come up and say the kangaroo diet or the monkey diet, but you don't have to fall for it with the vegan diet. You're going to get a complete. All your nutrients are gonna be there for you.

You just follow the recipes that you try on the Internet. Or in books, that's where I do most of the time. And you're going to find your favorite ones. You're going to learn batch cooking. You're going to be able to organize your food intake a lot better and a lot safer, and you'll be more in balance. Every diet has got problems. For example, the vegan diet may have a problem with B12. It may have problems with getting your calcium, may have problems getting your minerals. Everybody is going to find you something different, and they're not going to like your diet, but the diet not only saves the pain and suffering for the animals, but it also helps the planet. So overall, you're. Doing this diet.

Eating vegetables, fruit, legumes, seeds. Make your body better to. Get rid of all the toxins that you've eaten over the past holidays or over the past weeks. It's going to take time for your body to adjust to it. There are flatulence problems. Pardon. But you are going to be able to deal with those in time as your body can get cleans itself out from all the different types of foods that you've eaten over the years. And then you'll start seeing the improvements like I have. Well, I hope you've enjoyed this.

Podcast about fad diets and these are really my diets. What has happened to me? The vegan diet isn't. Perfect. But it's close to perfect as I like. And now I've decided to change the 30-day challenge from a vegan diet to this one here, inch-in-two diets by the Texas Fire Fire, who created a diet for his entire Firehouse. Here, he has a six-week diet, and I'm going to follow this diet. I'm going to bring you in with me so that you see the diet and understand it. And it and I'm going to try to explain it as I go along. Why each of the things that I'm eating are going to be helping me.
