Episode 9 The B12 Question and Vitamins

Image
A vegan diet offers numerous health benefits, but it's crucial to ensure you're getting all the essential nutrients, especially vitamin B12, which typically comes from animal sources. Let's delve into why B12 is essential for vegans and how to incorporate it into your diet effectively. Firstly, vitamin B12 supplementation is often necessary for vegans as it's not naturally present in plant-based foods. Many vegans opt for supplements like Naturelo Whole Foods Multivitamins, which provide the recommended 1.5 micrograms of B12 daily. These supplements are readily available online, such as Amazon, but ensure they're specifically labeled as vegan-friendly. The consequences of B12 deficiency can be severe and include symptoms like fatigue, weakness, dizziness, muscle weakness, constipation, loss of appetite, digestive issues, red and sore tongue, depression, mood disorders, poor memory, dementia, blurred vision, abnormal gait, hallucinations, personality changes, an

Episode 8 The Calcium Question and Bone Minerals

Image
Episode 8 “The Calcium Question and Bone Minerals. Today, we're diving into the calcium question and exploring the importance of bone minerals. Calcium is well-known for maintaining bone health but is also crucial for muscle contraction, blood pressure regulation, nerve transmission, and blood clotting. While calcium is vital, it's not the only mineral necessary for bone health. Explore other essential minerals and where to find them in your diet. Boron, for example, is crucial for reducing inflammation and can be found in almonds, apples, avocados, broccoli, celery, pears, peanuts, beans, peas, peaches, potatoes, prune juice, raisins, and tomatoes. Copper plays a role in energy production, connective tissue formation, and brain development, and it can be sourced from avocados, chickpeas, cashews, mushrooms, potatoes, tofu, and chocolate. Iron is involved in collagen synthesis and is abundant in dark green leafy vegetables. Magnesium regulates muscle and nerve function,

Episode 7 The Protein Question?

Image
Where Do Vegans Get Their Protein? In the world of nutrition, the question of protein often arises when discussing vegan diets. However, the misconception that plant-based eaters lack sufficient protein overlooks the abundance of protein sources available in the plant kingdom. Just like larger and smaller animals, including alpacas, bison, chickens, and zebras, vegans obtain their protein from various sources such as vegetables, grains, nuts, and seeds. The recommended daily allowance (RDA) for protein is commonly cited as 0.8 kilograms, but I propose dividing this by two for a more practical estimation of protein needs. For instance, the dietary guidelines for Americans suggest daily protein amounts of 46 grams for females and 56 grams for males. Athletes, including older adults, may require higher protein intake, ranging from 1.3 to 1.8 grams per kilogram of body weight. Proteins play vital roles in the body, serving as building blocks for tissues, enzymes, and antibodies and r

Later in life, I decided to do some self-defense courses and I took Taekwondo in four years. My wife and I received our black belts.  Time went along and a long period and I just walked my dogs. I stayed away from all the activities. I retired at 65 and I decided I've always wanted to do yoga. The first yoga I tried was called Burkham yoga.  I did Burkhan for over six months and it's coined as hot yoga. The rooms are at 105°F at 40% humidity. There are 26 basic postures. Often repeated. You're expected when you go to class to know the postures and ea

Episode 4 How I became a Vegan

Image
How I started becoming vegan. At that time I still worked at Amazon.com working 10 to 12-hour shifts. I was still juicing about two to three times a day. Lunch, dinner, and some snacks. And I was still looking for something more. I didn't know what it was but I wasn't finding it. So I purchased a Roku TV device that allows streaming services because you could get free cooking channels, on the Roku device. I had like 400 channels to choose from and it was really easy for me to find the different types of cooking that I was looking for. Some were Vegan, Vegetarian, Indian cooking, all different types of life. And since I was trying to figure out where I belonged, I believe that was the solution. There, I was incredibly lucky, and I found a woman called Jill McKeever. Watching her videos and how she did her food with no oil was a new concept for me. And there, I was able to start. I understand how she puts the different ingredients together using the Instapot pressure cooker or st

Image
Episode 2:  Who am I? And why am I vegan? And plant-based?  I'm a jack of all trades and a master of none. Here's my story. I was in the Air Force for four years, creating maps for air operations. While in college, I was a museum carpenter. In San Diego, I was a Mercy Hospital maintenance worker. After my degree in information science, I was a systems analyst. I've always been a handyman. I just love to fix and assemble things. I saw an advertisement as a truck driver and I pulled 48 and 53 trailers. The last job I had was as a package distributor at Amazon.com. At Amazon, working those 10 to 12-hour shifts. I needed more energy. Just eating the standard American food lunches was not working. My sister-in-law mentioned juicing. Vegetable juicing. I found on Prime a movie that showed my vegan journey. The movie is called Fat, Sick, and Nearly Dead. I purchased a Breville juicer. Later, I purchased two books from Joe Juice Diet and another one from 101 Juicing Recipes. After
